Meadowlark
  • Meadowlark
Title: “Meadowlark.” This painting is 8” x 7.5” set in a pine frame. The paint is applied thickly, known as the impasto technique, and I used mostly painting knives to apply the paint, and I also incorporated glazes in the painting. I love the song of meadowlarks and I see them frequently on my walks with my dog. Not only are they beautiful birds, but their behavior is intense and inspiring. When I paint them, I use cadmium yellow, ochre and platinum violet. Because the yellows and the violet are complimentary colors (opposites on the color wheel) they create a vibrancy when applied side by side and subtle, warm neutrals when mixed together.
  • Rut Rehearsal
Title: “Rut Rehearsal” This painting is 54” x 72” oil on canvas. The title refers to the young bull elk in the perimeters of the painting, who don’t seem to get too serious about the rut, which is the late summer/early fall mating ritual of the elk. The young bulls, known as spikes, appear to be “copying” the big bulls in preparation for the future rut in which they will become contenders. They remind me of young teenagers. One minute, they want that cow elk, and they approach the herd, but the big bull quickly chases them off. The next minute, I’ll observe them more interested in sedge and each other, than in “rehearsing” for mating season. They are one of my favorite animals as they are so animated and humorous. And, in all the years I’ve observed elk ruts, I’ve never seen a bull elk or another spike harm one of the young bulls.
  • Northern Wild
Title: “Northern Wild”. This is a 12” x 9” drawing set in a pine frame. I textured museum board and built up glazes with oil paint, then I drew the bear with grease pencil and sealed it with varnish. This is my very favorite method of expression. I love to draw and I am so influenced by ancient cave paintings, along with a since of “timelessness”, endurance, spontaneity and simplicity that this is the perfect media and medium.
  • and Now, A Word From Raven
Title: “and Now, A Word From Raven” oil on canvas. This painting is 84” x 108” . In my travels to National Parks and wilderness hiking, I had always looked for the big mammals, bears, mountain lions, wolves, etc. Three or four years ago, I began getting interested in the small wildlife, the birds, prairie dogs, even wild turkeys and insects to the extent that I enrolled in specialty classes and guided hikes to learn more about the “little” creatures. The main purpose was and is to enhance all my outdoor activities. Knowledge is love. Although I didn’t “consciously” begin this painting with any pre-set philosophy or judgment, it ended up being one of my favorites because of what it says to me. The birds, the flowers and the bugs are as “big” as the bears. There is no difference in their place in the universe. The title came about because of the humor I observe in nature. I have come upon a grizzly sow with cubs, packs of wolves with eagles at a kill site, herds of bison and elk, but what mostly led my curiosity in the first place, was the extreme cacophony of the ravens. They are like the world’s messengers and I include them in many of my paintings. To know them is to love them.
  • Twins
Title: “Twins” Mixed Media on canvas. This painting is 50” x 50” and although I painted it spontaneously, I sketched, observed and painted black bear cubs many times. This painting began with images of trees, which are very subtle, but visible under the numerous layers of glazes. Parts of the background resemble bark. The layers of oil paint and glazes were done both with brushes and painting knives. Once the paint was dry, I drew images of bears around the border using grease pencil. I then sealed the drawings with artist’s varnish. This painting, as with all my paintings, is archival.
  • Kestrel
Title: “Kestrel” 9” x 7.25” Oil on Wood, set in a 20” x 18.25” pine frame. The oil paint is applied thickly, known as the “impasto” technique and is done in an impressionistic style, which gives the painting movement and life. I did 90% of this painting with a painting knife and I applied multiple glazes. I enjoy feeding and watching the birds and I believe that painting them loosely and vibrantly depicts their nature. It gives them freedom. It would be much easier, and also very boring, for me to paint them stagnantly, with a lot of detail.
